Scotland faced Titanic task
Scotland, unfortnately, did not qualify for the Euro 2008 finals.
Having been drawn into one of the most difficult qualifying groups for Euro 2008,
few expected them to reach the next stage. Having to face both World Cup finalists,
France and Italy, as well as Ukraine, it was never going to be easy. Scotland have however done themselves proud.
They were in with a chance up until the very end, when in the final game they lost
(unfairly, some would say) to Italy at Hampden Park. |

At the time of the draw the then Scotland boss, Walter Smith,
was in no doubt about the task ahead. He said "I don't think we could have got it
much harder." Since then Scotland have beaten France, twice. They now also
command a agreat deal more respect - no country will now look on Scotland without a second thought.
More importantly, Scotland are now sufficiently highly rated to allow them to be given a second seed place
for the World Cup qualifiers. This will help no end and qualification for World Cup 2010 has received
a welcome boost.
