The first official Scotland match took place on St Andrews Day, 1872. It took place at
Hamilton Crescent, the West of Scotland Cricket Ground. The opposition was the 'Auld Enemy', England, and the
game ended goalless.
The English FA, particularly Charles Alcock (who founded the FA Cup), was the driving force behind the match.
Previous to 1872 they had arranged several unoffical
matches between Scotland and England. They were so keen about these games that they would select the match
officials, the England team and even the players for the Scotland team.
Until 1872 the Scottish players were all London-based, the FA choosing eleven footballers with Scottish connections.
Now they wanted to have an official event.
In the 1872 match the Scottish players were all based in Scotland. The were
selected by Queens Park Captain, Bob Gardner. He had hoped to pick two London-based
players, Arthur F Kinnaird and Lt Henry Waugh Renny-Tailyour, both of whom had played in the FA Cup final.
Unfortunately, they were unavailable. In the end all of the Scotland team, were from the Queens Park team.
Scotland played in dark blue shirts, the then colour of Queen's Park. And the game was watched by a crowd of 4,000.
